Alexis Schulman

My name is Alexis Schulman and I’m a born and raised Jersey shore girl. I grew up 5 minutes from the beach, so bare feet and a sand filled jeep were always the normal for me. Living in such a diverse place constantly awarded me the opportunity to explore almost any activity I was interested in. These ranged from simply lounging in the sun at the beach to rock climbing in northern New Jersey to eating my way through New York City. I always considered my life complete because I was blessed with a great family, the two best friends a girl could ever have and an amazing career as a forester. Then I met my now husband Jason. Our parents were best friends for years, but Jason and I never met. He moved to California the year before we met and I was busy going to college and traveling everywhere I could. When I came back from Europe in June of 2008, I finally met the man of my dreams on his birthday. After traveling to California to see him almost twice every month, he moved back to New Jersey that November to start a life with me. In March 2009, Jason and his little brother decided to join the Marine Corps and that May they were both off to boot camp. After graduation, we were engaged to be married, and because of the unpredictable nature of the military, we decided to get married during Christmas leave on December 27th. Our ceremony was tiny, consisting of our closest family and friends in Atlantic City, NJ. I couldn’t ask for a more gorgeous day. This August, I decided to leave Rutgers University when Jason was stationed here in Jacksonville. A week after we moved here, we found out that we were pregnant! Now here we are, transitioning into the 2nd trimester with our first sonogram on October 29th, due on Mother’s Day 2011 and loving every single decision we’ve made that landed us here. I look forward to sharing our fairytale and perhaps helping others and learning from them too.

Braxton Hicks Are Slowing Me Down

The Braxton Hicks contractions have set in and they are really getting in my way. I do not remember dealing with these contractions too much when I was pregnant with Elli. I know that I had them on and off some, but they did not really get in my way too much. I also remember that the weekend before Elli was born I was having them at regular intervals and I was pretty sure she would be arriving soon. According to this article on O’Healthy, Braxton Hicks contractions start appearing in the third trimester at irregular intervals to begin to prepare your body for childbirth. I have noticed that I am getting them when I do things like bend over to give Elli her bath, take walks, vacuum, or am picking Elli up. My very “unmedical” opinion is that when I am exerting energy I am more likely to have

My First Birthing Class

I am extremely committed to a natural birth. It’s not some kind of sadistic need to prove I can do it, I just grew up in a family where natural birth was the way things were done, so it’s always been my plan even before I conceived. I’m number four of my mother’s six kids, five of which she gave birth to naturally and without throwing a huge fit over the matter. Epidurals were readily available, but until she was in her forties and had been laboring for days with my youngest sister that she finally decided to just go ahead and get an epidural. After the experience, she said she had been a bit too harsh with women who opted for an epidural. She still felt everything, but that feeling wasn’t painful. Now that I’m about to give birth for the first time and have this strong commitment to a drug

Going Into Labor Early, What Works Best?

I am now less than 2 weeks away from my scheduled C-section. However, its the holidays and I am more than ready to go into labor. If your an impatient mother like me then I know your ready to get this show on the road. Like me, your also asking everyone under the son from grandma to co-workers how you can make yourself go into labor. I have been asking a lot of people lately and I have received a different answer from everyone I talked to. Co-workers told me to walk a lot, sweep the carpet in my house, and bounce on my inflatable exercise ball. Friends have told me to walk around and relax. My hairdresser told me to drink a little castor oil and that will send me into labor in no time. With all of this advice flying around its hard to know what and who

It’s been fun, TummyTime!

I can’t believe I’m writing this post, but it’s time for me to say good-bye to TummyTime.  It’s weird that this is going to be my last post because Levi is only 9 months old and I have so much more to share with everyone and so so so so much more to learn about parenthood from everyone, as well!  Boy, have we covered so much already though!  We started out talking about pregnant bellies, hormones, vitamins, morning sickness, doctor’s visits, ultrasounds, baby showers, past due, labor, delivery, and so much more! Sharing the main points about Levi’s birth with women who have been there, done that or who were about to be there and doing that was really a great way to becoming a better mother.  Without all the knowledge from others and comforting advice I’m not sure I would have been able to figure out motherhood as well

What a Year

2011 has been such an amazing year, and it’s not even over yet! I just want to recap all the excitement and the blessings Blake and I have experienced so far, mostly, the fact that we became parents to the most beautiful baby boy in the world. January- We prepared for the birth of our first baby. I was 8 months pregnant even though I felt like I had been pregnant for over a year! February- I was getting scared and crying a lot: One, I had never given birth to anyone before and I was so scared it would hurt. Two, I didn’t know if I would be a good mom or not. March- Getting impatient… baby became over due… then, Blake and I became parents. April- Getting used to being parents and losing sleep. We were anxiously awaiting the first milestone Levi would have! Levi also experienced his
