Alexis Schulman

My name is Alexis Schulman and I’m a born and raised Jersey shore girl. I grew up 5 minutes from the beach, so bare feet and a sand filled jeep were always the normal for me. Living in such a diverse place constantly awarded me the opportunity to explore almost any activity I was interested in. These ranged from simply lounging in the sun at the beach to rock climbing in northern New Jersey to eating my way through New York City. I always considered my life complete because I was blessed with a great family, the two best friends a girl could ever have and an amazing career as a forester. Then I met my now husband Jason. Our parents were best friends for years, but Jason and I never met. He moved to California the year before we met and I was busy going to college and traveling everywhere I could. When I came back from Europe in June of 2008, I finally met the man of my dreams on his birthday. After traveling to California to see him almost twice every month, he moved back to New Jersey that November to start a life with me. In March 2009, Jason and his little brother decided to join the Marine Corps and that May they were both off to boot camp. After graduation, we were engaged to be married, and because of the unpredictable nature of the military, we decided to get married during Christmas leave on December 27th. Our ceremony was tiny, consisting of our closest family and friends in Atlantic City, NJ. I couldn’t ask for a more gorgeous day. This August, I decided to leave Rutgers University when Jason was stationed here in Jacksonville. A week after we moved here, we found out that we were pregnant! Now here we are, transitioning into the 2nd trimester with our first sonogram on October 29th, due on Mother’s Day 2011 and loving every single decision we’ve made that landed us here. I look forward to sharing our fairytale and perhaps helping others and learning from them too.

“Glow”? I Think You Mean “Grow.”

At my last midwife appointment, I weighed in at a whopping 154 pounds. I stand at a meager 5’2″ tall, so this is definitely the most I have weighed in my life. Before getting pregnant, I was a healthy 130 pounds and was working out at the gym, so that number was on the decline before getting two bright pink lines on a pee stick. The most I have ever weighed was 145 pounds, so needless to say, that number was a bit hard to swallow. Of course, weight gain is a normal and healthy part of pregnancy, so I’m not really concerned, it was just a bit of a blow to the ego. That weigh in was about three weeks ago, and now that I’m 31 weeks pregnant, the baby is supposed to be putting on a half pound of weight each week by herself. That means the number

Better Safe Than Sorry

We had a small scare at our house today. I was sitting crossed legged on the floor watching TV with Elli. She decided she wanted to sit in my lap and I never turn down an opportunity to snuggle with her. Somewhere along the way though, she decided she wanted to jump instead of sit. Before I knew it, Elli jumped as hard as her 30 pounds could jump right on top of my belly (she isn’t quite big enough to understand why she needs to be careful). I’m not going to lie – it hurt. A weird pain shot all the way through my stomach and I started worrying. I try to keep my obnoxious worries in check, but this time things felt a bit different. I decided the best thing to do would be to take some time on the couch and see if I could feel the

Go Mommy Go!!

During my first pregnancy I was adamant about exercise. I had heard that it would make labor faster and less painful and I was all for it. I didn’t do anything extreme but I did try to get in a good cardio work out five or six times a week. Typically I went for a three or four mile walk. I know that is not a lot and that there are pregnant women out there logging many more intense work outs than me, but I found that it was just enough to keep my weight gain healthy and my body pain free. I also truly enjoyed that time to myself and would listen to podcasts on pregnancy, labor, and infant care. As I got further along in my pregnancy, my pace may have slowed but I was as dedicated as ever to walk right up until the baby arrived. I

Overwhelmed by Eating Clean

I’m not big on New Year’s Resolutions, but this year I thought it might be a good time to get some things in order in our house. I realize that having a second child is going to change so many things and I want to be ready, organized, and prepared (if that is even possible?!?) I downloaded a decluttering calendar to try and get my house in order. I also downloaded a new cleaning schedule that promises just 15 minutes a day will have my house guest ready. So that would take care of the house things I want to fix. Then I started thinking health. We’ve always been a fairly healthy family. We eat ground turkey more than red meat; we exercise and play outside; we eat brown rice instead of white. But, I have been looking more at my grocery cart and realizing that it might not be

It’s been fun, TummyTime!

I can’t believe I’m writing this post, but it’s time for me to say good-bye to TummyTime.  It’s weird that this is going to be my last post because Levi is only 9 months old and I have so much more to share with everyone and so so so so much more to learn about parenthood from everyone, as well!  Boy, have we covered so much already though!  We started out talking about pregnant bellies, hormones, vitamins, morning sickness, doctor’s visits, ultrasounds, baby showers, past due, labor, delivery, and so much more! Sharing the main points about Levi’s birth with women who have been there, done that or who were about to be there and doing that was really a great way to becoming a better mother.  Without all the knowledge from others and comforting advice I’m not sure I would have been able to figure out motherhood as well
