Joakima Carr

I was born on October 18, 1981, in Honolulu, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. From a young age, I have always had a fascination with books. Some kids throw tantrums for toys in the grocery store, but not me. I went crazy for a brand new book. I had to have one or else I closed my eyes, threw my head backwards, threw my arms by my sides and jumped up and down crying. Needless to say, this fascination with books and love for reading only intensified throughout the years. My personal collection of books has grown to fill more than five bookcases. I later discovered a love for music and singing in elementary school. Who knew that this would lead to my learning to play the French horn and playing in the marching and concert bands in middle school and high school? My talent for singing helped me to win my high school beauty pageant and the honor of “most talented” for the graduating class of 2000. Music continued to hold on to me even in college. I spent years studying as a classically trained Mezzo-soprano and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the Florida State University College of Music. I also continued to play the French horn and marched in the world-renowned 400+ member Marching Chiefs for 3 years. Today, I look forward to finishing my graduate degree coursework in Nutrition Education and Health Promotion and conducting research. I am a certified fitness, yoga, and Spinning instructor. I have a small Snoodle named Thomas. I am now the proud wife of an active duty Marine. We recently moved to the Camp Lejeune area in April. We have a beautiful 14-month-old son and are currently expecting our second bundle of joy January 7, 2012.

My name is Alexis Schulman and I’m a born and raised Jersey shore girl. I grew up 5 minutes from the beach, so bare feet and a sand filled jeep were always the normal for me. Living in such a diverse place constantly awarded me the opportunity to explore almost any activity I was interested in. These ranged from simply lounging in the sun at the beach to rock climbing in northern New Jersey to eating my way through New York City. I always considered my life complete because I was blessed with a great family, the two best friends a girl could ever have and an amazing career as a forester. Then I met my now husband Jason. Our parents were best friends for years, but Jason and I never met. He moved to California the year before we met and I was busy going to college and traveling everywhere I could. When I came back from Europe in June of 2008, I finally met the man of my dreams on his birthday. After traveling to California to see him almost twice every month, he moved back to New Jersey that November to start a life with me. In March 2009, Jason and his little brother decided to join the Marine Corps and that May they were both off to boot camp. After graduation, we were engaged to be married, and because of the unpredictable nature of the military, we decided to get married during Christmas leave on December 27th. Our ceremony was tiny, consisting of our closest family and friends in Atlantic City, NJ. I couldn’t ask for a more gorgeous day. This August, I decided to leave Rutgers University when Jason was stationed here in Jacksonville. A week after we moved here, we found out that we were pregnant! Now here we are, transitioning into the 2nd trimester with our first sonogram on October 29th, due on Mother’s Day 2011 and loving every single decision we’ve made that landed us here. I look forward to sharing our fairytale and perhaps helping others and learning from them too.
