Molly Mathews

My name is Molly. I have been married for 5 years and have two children. A 10 year old step-son, a 2 year old daughter and I am currently 26 weeks pregnant with a boy! I live in the town I grew up in and have a large family that I see often. We all live close to each other right now and I hope it stays that way as we draw a lot of support from one another. I have been a nurse for 6 years, mostly in the emergency department, and I love my job. Since young childhood I dreamed of being a nurse and a mom and here I am both! I couldn't have imagined how difficult the journey would be but neither could I have fathomed the Joy that would come from both. Becoming a mom has made me into a better person in many ways and a bit of a crazy worry wart in other ways! Having support from other moms who have been there before or are there with you makes all the difference in the world!

A Different Kind of Stranger Anxiety

Caelum is the sweetest, most relaxed baby I have ever encountered. I am slightly biased on this though! He is at that age where he is smiling and laughing a lot and loves everybody. He doesn’t seem to care who is holding him he loves whoever it is.

Recently though we discovered that there is one person he seems to be wary of…. my mother in law. This is not good as it hurts her feelings. She doesn’t see him often but even others he sees infrequently or even strangers don’t bother him. I think at first she was just over excited and kind of scared him so I wrote it off. But recently she visited again for several hours and each time she tried to hold him he kind of tensed up and fussed.

My daughter was not like this at all she was quite the opposite with my mother in law. But Lyra was already showing some preference to myself and her dad at this age too. There’s not much I can do except wait it out. I certainly don’t want Caelum to be uncomfortable but hate seeing her feelings hurt.

Any ideas on how to help with baby being wary of a family member?
