Molly Mathews

My name is Molly. I have been married for 5 years and have two children. A 10 year old step-son, a 2 year old daughter and I am currently 26 weeks pregnant with a boy! I live in the town I grew up in and have a large family that I see often. We all live close to each other right now and I hope it stays that way as we draw a lot of support from one another. I have been a nurse for 6 years, mostly in the emergency department, and I love my job. Since young childhood I dreamed of being a nurse and a mom and here I am both! I couldn't have imagined how difficult the journey would be but neither could I have fathomed the Joy that would come from both. Becoming a mom has made me into a better person in many ways and a bit of a crazy worry wart in other ways! Having support from other moms who have been there before or are there with you makes all the difference in the world!

Water Aversion

Pregnant women are supposed to drink water; and lots of it!  I know and I have been trying to adhere to it.  But I’ve gotta say, this go-round, water is not the same.  I have always loved water.  And the benefits of it are well-known to me, so I have never had a problem drinking it.  Yes, I am a southern girl and I LOVE a glass of nice cold sweet tea, even a soda from time to time, but I can also drink water.  Water in a glass with a slice of lemon, water out of the faucet, water from a water bottle, fancy water at a nice restaurant…it’s all water.  At least it was in the past.

But presently speaking, water and I are NOT getting along.  I find myself forcing it down lately because I know that my body needs it and so does the baby.  I don’t understand what is
going on with me.  Suddenly water has a taste; a very distinct taste and it’s not very pleasant.  It does not seem to matter what kind of water it is; I can’t drink it.  I want to gag as I taste it in my mouth.  The taste, I can’t even describe.  Sometimes it tastes like metal.  Other times it tastes like plastic.   I find myself dreading the thought of having to drink water when I get up in the morning. During the day, I find myself drinking other things besides water…anything to get away from it.

With my other pregnancies, I had no problem downing 8 to 10 glasses of water every day.  My doctors always commented on how well my “pee” looked when I went in for a checkup!  Ha! But this time, it’s just not the same. This has been going on for several weeks now and I am beginning to feel
the repercussions of it; headaches, cramping, and possibly a bladder infection, ugh.

I am hoping that my doctor will have good advice for me when I go in tomorrow for my general checkup.

Have any of you had a water aversion before or any other food/drink aversion during pregnancy?  If so, what did you do about it?

I didn’t have an aversion, but I agree that sometimes the metallic taste is there – YUCK!

Yes, it’s awful. My doctor said I was the first one to tell him I had an aversion to water!

Have you tried using a flavor enhancer like Crystal Light or something along those lines?

  • Sharon Knosky June 20th, 2012 1:44 pm

Yes. That’s what the Dr. ordered! and it is working thanks!

I was wondering if those flavor enhancers were safe to use myself! I had been told to avoid some because of the sugar substitutes. Have you heard that? If so which ones are safe and which ones should we avoid?

My OB said that it was ok for me, but there is a kind with natural sugar called Truvia if you are concerned about the sweeteners.
