Molly Mathews

My name is Molly. I have been married for 5 years and have two children. A 10 year old step-son, a 2 year old daughter and I am currently 26 weeks pregnant with a boy! I live in the town I grew up in and have a large family that I see often. We all live close to each other right now and I hope it stays that way as we draw a lot of support from one another. I have been a nurse for 6 years, mostly in the emergency department, and I love my job. Since young childhood I dreamed of being a nurse and a mom and here I am both! I couldn't have imagined how difficult the journey would be but neither could I have fathomed the Joy that would come from both. Becoming a mom has made me into a better person in many ways and a bit of a crazy worry wart in other ways! Having support from other moms who have been there before or are there with you makes all the difference in the world!

Follow-Up Appointment

The final stop on our road trip was heading to Duke University Hospital for Arbor’s follow-up appointment from her hospital stay immediately after her birth. Originally, they had scheduled us for two appointments. The first was a hearing screen. She passed her initial newborn screen but was on antibiotics at the time, so they wanted to retest her to ensure the results were accurate. The person who had scheduled the appointment must not have realized that she was supposed to be retested at 3-6 months, not 5 weeks. As a result, they told us to reschedule when she’s a little older. It was a good thing we had a second appointment scheduled, or else I’d be really irritated at the travel for no reason.

Arbor's Growth Charts.

The second appointment was with the Special Infant Care Clinic. That one pretty much went like any other well-child check up. They took all her measurements, asked if we had any concerns, and called it a day. She weighed in at 9 lbs 3 oz with a length of 20.5 inches. This means she’s put on a pound since her last naval hospital appointment, and two pounds and an ounce since she was born. They plugged the numbers into a growth chart and were very happy with her development. She’s in the 25-50th percentile for both height and weight, which means she’s perfectly average.

Because I declined to give her Vitamin D or a multivitamin, they tested her blood for both Vitamin D levels and her hematocrit to make sure she’s not anemic and that her bones are hardening properly. I will have to call on those results next week to find out for sure, but we have no reason to believe that she’s deficient.

Absent any unexpected complications, we will not have to return to Duke for another followup until September, although I honestly do not understand why she needs to go back considering she is in perfect health, requires no medications, is growing appropriately and sees a pediatrician on base. I plan to ask at her next appointment why we have to keep coming back.

Have you had to take your baby to out-of-town appointments?

We have to do a 6 month follow up appointment in Greenville for Jackson’s heart murmur even though the Dr. said it was completely fine and shouldn’t cause any problems. I guess they just like to be sure nothing has changed in. I know travel is a pain but I guess it is good they are thorough. So glad Arbor is doing great!

She has a follow up appointment specifically for her heart in October. I’m just not understanding the purpose of the other appointments… it’s the same stuff they do at regular well-child check ups, so why don’t they just coordinate with her primary care provider?
