Laura Waller

My name is Laura Waller and I attended Appalachian State University. After college I moved to Washington DC where I taught Kindergarten. The best part of my time in DC was meeting my wonderful husband Jacob. After enjoying all the excitement of DC, we moved back to Eastern North Carolina, where I continued teaching. After trying for a while to get pregnant and meeting with infertility doctors, we welcomed our first child, Elliana, into the world. Elliana means “my God has answered” and she certainly is our answered prayer. We decided that I would stay home to be with Elli full time. When Elli turned one year old, I decided to cheat a little on the “stay at home” gig and take a part time job working with refugee families in the school systems. That job will end in the Spring of 2012 and, as timing would have it, our second baby is due in May. At this point in time, my days are consumed with keeping up with Elli (which is harder than it sounds), working, trying to find exciting activities around Eastern NC for our family to experience, an occasional work out, and honestly - an occasional nap. I know things are certainly going to change in our house and in some ways that makes me a bit nervous so I am always excited to get advice from experienced moms!

Wish I’d Known About That Sooner!

I am probably completely behind here, but I am just realizing there are some great apps out there for pregnancy. I am sure most of you are way ahead of me and have already downloaded a pregnancy app and are using it daily, but for those of you who may not know about these – I want to share.

There are many apps out there that can be downloaded to your Smartphone that will help you throughout your entire pregnancy. Late last night while I was letting Elli cry herself to sleep (that is another blog post entirely) I searched through my Android market for a few samples. I downloaded two free apps – Happy Pregnancy and Pregnancy (by Baby Center). At 3:30 am I was able to do a lot of playing on these two apps and I loved what I found. Both apps have a bar running across the top of my phone that shows me how close to my due date I actually am.

They also tell me the exact amount of days I have left in the pregnancy and exactly how many days pregnant I am. The BabyCenter app has a tip for every day of the pregnancy from how many whole grains I should be eating to how to write a birth plan. It also has a check list for each day of the pregnancy to help you get ready for the big day. The Happy Pregnancy app has a weight chart that shows you the maximum and minimum you should weigh each week and where you fall on the spectrum. It has a place for you to see your baby’s progress each week, trimester information, and information for week of the pregnancy.

It also has a great timer feature which lets you time baby kicks (for when kick counting starts) and time contractions when those start as well. There are other apps out there with other helpful features like offering a place for you to record information from your doctor visits or providing a connection to pregnancy forums. You can check out this link for the Top 25 Pregnancy Apps for iPhones and this link for the Top 25 Pregnancy Apps for Droids. I wish I had known about this when I was pregnant with Elli or even earlier in this pregnancy, but I’m glad I at least discovered it last night. If you haven’t downloaded an app for your pregnancy I would strongly encourage you to do it, it can be exciting to watch as your pregnancy progresses!

What app do you use? What do you like about it?
