Laura Waller

My name is Laura Waller and I attended Appalachian State University. After college I moved to Washington DC where I taught Kindergarten. The best part of my time in DC was meeting my wonderful husband Jacob. After enjoying all the excitement of DC, we moved back to Eastern North Carolina, where I continued teaching. After trying for a while to get pregnant and meeting with infertility doctors, we welcomed our first child, Elliana, into the world. Elliana means “my God has answered” and she certainly is our answered prayer. We decided that I would stay home to be with Elli full time. When Elli turned one year old, I decided to cheat a little on the “stay at home” gig and take a part time job working with refugee families in the school systems. That job will end in the Spring of 2012 and, as timing would have it, our second baby is due in May. At this point in time, my days are consumed with keeping up with Elli (which is harder than it sounds), working, trying to find exciting activities around Eastern NC for our family to experience, an occasional work out, and honestly - an occasional nap. I know things are certainly going to change in our house and in some ways that makes me a bit nervous so I am always excited to get advice from experienced moms!

It’s So Close!

I’m a member of an online group of women who are all due in March. There’s about 30 of us or so, and we all have similar goals for our childbirth experience, how we want to raise or kids, and lead similar lifestyles. We live all over the country, but we talk every day. It’s been the most amazing support group ever. Over the course of our pregnancies, our due dates have been moved around, we’ve learned about minor health complications, and we’ve even lost a couple babies. We honestly consider each other to be very close and dear friends.

This family has nothing on what my family is hoping to do for Arbor Day.

The first of the group’s babies was born yesterday. I’m eager to read the birth story as soon as Mama recovers enough to share, but in the mean time, we’re getting labor updates from a second mama who went into labor last night. We have established a phone chain to continue updating the group even if we’re away from the internet and don’t want the group worrying. As these ladies start to give birth and bring our new “squishies” into the world, it makes me realize just how close my due date actually is! I’m not due until March 30th, but baby will be full term on March 9th. As silly as it might sound, I’m hoping to give birth on March 16th because it’s Arbor Day in North Carolina. The novelty of giving birth to Arbor Roselia on Arbor Day would just be too awesome.

I feel significantly more prepared for labor than I did just a few weeks ago. Between my weekly birth classes, my extensive research and talking to more of the providers at my prenatal care office, I don’t feel like I’m going in blind. I’m still reading like crazy, watching as many DVDs and documentaries I can get my hands on and am continuing my prenatal exercises. My diet is in good shape, and I’m feeling very confident about my health, Arbor’s health, and giving birth in a few more weeks.

What did you do to prepare for labor and delivery? Do you feel like anything you did was a waste of time?
