Laura Waller

My name is Laura Waller and I attended Appalachian State University. After college I moved to Washington DC where I taught Kindergarten. The best part of my time in DC was meeting my wonderful husband Jacob. After enjoying all the excitement of DC, we moved back to Eastern North Carolina, where I continued teaching. After trying for a while to get pregnant and meeting with infertility doctors, we welcomed our first child, Elliana, into the world. Elliana means “my God has answered” and she certainly is our answered prayer. We decided that I would stay home to be with Elli full time. When Elli turned one year old, I decided to cheat a little on the “stay at home” gig and take a part time job working with refugee families in the school systems. That job will end in the Spring of 2012 and, as timing would have it, our second baby is due in May. At this point in time, my days are consumed with keeping up with Elli (which is harder than it sounds), working, trying to find exciting activities around Eastern NC for our family to experience, an occasional work out, and honestly - an occasional nap. I know things are certainly going to change in our house and in some ways that makes me a bit nervous so I am always excited to get advice from experienced moms!

The Shortest Month With The Most To Do

February is approaching rather quickly and I’m finding myself overwhelmed with the number of events coming up. On the first of the month, I will be turning 21, not that I will be able to celebrate. I have every intention of purchasing a bottle of wine simply to exercise my right to do so, and then tucking it away in a cupboard until I am no longer pregnant and ready to drink a glass from it. In lieu of an alcohol celebration, I have found a simple recipe for mojito mocktails to try. My husband has promised me a starter sewing machine for my gift, which I’m very much so looking forward to.

I was so busy scheduling my February, I think I forgot to make time to celebrate Valentine's Day!

About a week later, that wonderful husband of mine and I will be celebrating our first wedding anniversary. We don’t have any plans for the exact date, February 9th, but we will be celebrating that weekend in conjunction with our baby shower. My mom has booked us an executive suite in Virginia to throw the shower in as well as celebrate our anniversary. We currently have 15 confirmed guests, and an outstanding two dozen invitations or so. I don’t expect even half of those to show up, but if they do, the more the merrier! Several of my friends are living too far away to attend, or simply have a scheduling conflict, but I’ve been getting well wishes and facebook messages suggesting I watch my mailbox for some things they’re sending my way.

After the shower, I’ll have thank you cards to make and write, and as an extremely organized mom, I’ll need to inventory all of our baby related supplies and determine what we still need to buy. Fortunately, the grandparents are handling our major purchases like the crib and changing table, but all of the little things will still need to be bought. By the time I get all of that figured out and the furniture arrives, it will be the end of the month. I really don’t want to wait til the last minute to get the nursery set up, so that’s the last item on the February to-do list. Then it’s just a matter of playing the waiting game through March while we wait for Arbor to make her appearance into the world.

Is your February looking as busy as mine? Have any advice to help me keep my sanity during the baby shower?

The best thing anyone ever did for me at a baby shower was have a set of thank you cards ready at the door. As guests came in, they took an envelope and went ahead and wrote their name and address on it. So when I got home the thank you cards were there and the envelopes had addresses…all I had to do was write the thank you itself! It was sooo wonderful because it saved me so much time looking up addresses etc. See if whoever is throwing you the shower could set up a little table like that at the door for you!

Thanks for the tip! That sounds like a great idea. I have my 14 year old sister set up to sit beside me when I open gifts and write down everything I receive and who is giving it, that way I won’t have to try to remember through cloudy placenta brain, and the envelopes will make it even easier!
