Joakima Carr

I was born on October 18, 1981, in Honolulu, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. From a young age, I have always had a fascination with books. Some kids throw tantrums for toys in the grocery store, but not me. I went crazy for a brand new book. I had to have one or else I closed my eyes, threw my head backwards, threw my arms by my sides and jumped up and down crying. Needless to say, this fascination with books and love for reading only intensified throughout the years. My personal collection of books has grown to fill more than five bookcases. I later discovered a love for music and singing in elementary school. Who knew that this would lead to my learning to play the French horn and playing in the marching and concert bands in middle school and high school? My talent for singing helped me to win my high school beauty pageant and the honor of “most talented” for the graduating class of 2000. Music continued to hold on to me even in college. I spent years studying as a classically trained Mezzo-soprano and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the Florida State University College of Music. I also continued to play the French horn and marched in the world-renowned 400+ member Marching Chiefs for 3 years. Today, I look forward to finishing my graduate degree coursework in Nutrition Education and Health Promotion and conducting research. I am a certified fitness, yoga, and Spinning instructor. I have a small Snoodle named Thomas. I am now the proud wife of an active duty Marine. We recently moved to the Camp Lejeune area in April. We have a beautiful 14-month-old son and are currently expecting our second bundle of joy January 7, 2012.

Shopping for Levi’s Christmas Presents

Blake and I took Levi to Toys R Us so we could start getting some Christmas presents for him. We found some cute things and Blake kept showing them to Levi to see if he was interested in them. I kept having to tell him to stop showing Levi his Christmas presents until it was time for Levi to try and unwrap them! Even though Levi seemed a bit more interested in the boxes than the actual toys in them, it was still fun to see which ones he seemed to like better.

We grabbed a small piano-like toy that lights up and plays lots of songs. We also grabbed one of my favorites, floating singing duckies for the bathtub. Levi plays with a few bath toys now, well he mostly tries to eat them, but these are going to be a hit when he’s 9 months old, which is how old he’ll be around Christmas time. We also found him an awesome pair of sunglasses. Whether he wears them or not, he’ll look stylish! Not only did we make toy shopping fun for the little one, but since we were around so many toys that made sounds and played music, what kind of mother would I be if I didn’t dance with my son?!

One of the store employees caught me dancing, but I was making Levi laugh, so I didn’t care. I had his hand and we were doing a bouncy sort of tango. Blake laughed quite a bit, too. I told him shopping with your baby brings out your inner nerd because you’ll do anything to make them laugh- I will anyways. Oh, also while we were there I found one of those shopping cart covers that you can use to cover high chairs, too. I’ve been wanting one, and now I have one!

What toys are you getting your little ones for Christmas this year?
