Laura Waller

My name is Laura Waller and I attended Appalachian State University. After college I moved to Washington DC where I taught Kindergarten. The best part of my time in DC was meeting my wonderful husband Jacob. After enjoying all the excitement of DC, we moved back to Eastern North Carolina, where I continued teaching. After trying for a while to get pregnant and meeting with infertility doctors, we welcomed our first child, Elliana, into the world. Elliana means “my God has answered” and she certainly is our answered prayer. We decided that I would stay home to be with Elli full time. When Elli turned one year old, I decided to cheat a little on the “stay at home” gig and take a part time job working with refugee families in the school systems. That job will end in the Spring of 2012 and, as timing would have it, our second baby is due in May. At this point in time, my days are consumed with keeping up with Elli (which is harder than it sounds), working, trying to find exciting activities around Eastern NC for our family to experience, an occasional work out, and honestly - an occasional nap. I know things are certainly going to change in our house and in some ways that makes me a bit nervous so I am always excited to get advice from experienced moms!

Levi Says

Once he gives in to being tired he can sleep like an angel.

I was watching America’s Funniest Home Videos and there was a video of a mom filming her 1 year old daughter throwing a temper tantrum. The little girl actually threw her head back and arched her back and did a sort of back-bend move down to the floor and on to her back, where she continued to cry and scream at the top of her lungs. The mom tells the little girl she’ll be right back, leaves the living room as the little girl is throwing her temper tantrum, walks through the kitchen and sneaks up on her daughter by entering the other way into the living room. As she’s moving the video camera through the kitchen it’s obvious the little girl has stopped crying because you can’t hear her anymore.  As soon as the little girls sees her mom again she repeats the head throw, arched back and back bends again down to the floor for take 2. Keep in mind this is a 1 year old little girl. Sometimes we forget how fast our kids grow and how much they learn; and then AFHM’s comes on TV and reminds us with videos like this one.

I feel that Levi has managed to pull a similar stunt on me. Given he doesn’t do a back bend, he can’t stand yet, and he doesn’t throw his head back, but forwards instead. I’ll set him down on the floor and if he isn’t having it he’ll let me know. The kid can let out a cry and it’s not over until he’s been picked back up or distracted somehow. I try to crackle a water bottle or find something that lights up, but sometimes he just wants to be picked up.

I’ve noticed that these tantrums happen close to around the times he’s tired and ready for a nap or bed. I know he’s just fighting sleep or he’s bored maybe and that I should let him cry it out, but when it’s your kid it can be kind of hard. When he looks down, closes he eyes really tight and starts quivering that bottom lip as he starts to turn red, I can’t help but give in, enabler or not. It just goes to show that I tend to do what Levi says.

Would you do anything differently?
