Molly Mathews

My name is Molly. I have been married for 5 years and have two children. A 10 year old step-son, a 2 year old daughter and I am currently 26 weeks pregnant with a boy! I live in the town I grew up in and have a large family that I see often. We all live close to each other right now and I hope it stays that way as we draw a lot of support from one another. I have been a nurse for 6 years, mostly in the emergency department, and I love my job. Since young childhood I dreamed of being a nurse and a mom and here I am both! I couldn't have imagined how difficult the journey would be but neither could I have fathomed the Joy that would come from both. Becoming a mom has made me into a better person in many ways and a bit of a crazy worry wart in other ways! Having support from other moms who have been there before or are there with you makes all the difference in the world!

Twice the Risk for Blood Clots

Have you woken up in the middle of the night with a horrible cramp in your leg that you can easily massage out?  Do you know how to tell the difference between a cramp in the leg and a blood clot?  Apparently, flying can increase the ALREADY increased risk of blood clots for pregnant women.  Something I took note of since we’re about to do a lot of flying.

If the cramp is warm to the touch then don't try to massage it.

I learned all this at a visit with a mid-wife that Blake and I saw recently at Naval.  She was one of the most informative and friendly that we’ve had the pleasure of meeting with, however, the abundance of information she had for us was overwhelming to hear.  I mentioned to her that I was going to be flying quite a bit this week and next and I wanted to double-check that it was o.k. for Levi.  She proceeded to tell me that I should be fine but there were some precautions I needed to be aware of.

Number 1.  There is a possibility that I will be experiencing “practice contractions” (otherwise known as Braxton Hicks contractions) because of how many weeks along I am.  It is normal for women around 24-30 weeks to begin to experience this and feeling about 5 of them in an hour is normal.  This is not caused by flying but if I experience these practice contractions continuously about 10 minutes apart, I need to make sure there’s a hospital around so I can go immediately.

Number 2.  Circulation problems are common with pregnant women because of all the extra blood-flow we have going on in our bodies.  Moving the legs around and stretching them out can be difficult on airplanes because the planes are so tightly seated, so the risk of blood clots for pregnant women (in general) is normally 2x higher than that of a non-pregnant person.  The mid-wife told me that after or during any of my plane rides I feel a deep, sharp pain anywhere in my legs, and if it’s a spot that is warm to the touch, then I don’t need to rub it out like I normally would a cramp.  She said that it’s a blood clot, and rubbing it can release it to move freely through the veins and into my lungs!  So, if I experience this I need to rush to the hospital…

After she was done telling me a few more “what to look fors,” she told me to enjoy my trip now that she’d scared me!  She was funny and nice, but now I’m going to be worrying if I have any pains that are warm to the touch, or if I’m experiencing practice contractions too often!

Have your doctors/midwives mentioned any of this to you, too?
