Alexis Schulman

My name is Alexis Schulman and I’m a born and raised Jersey shore girl. I grew up 5 minutes from the beach, so bare feet and a sand filled jeep were always the normal for me. Living in such a diverse place constantly awarded me the opportunity to explore almost any activity I was interested in. These ranged from simply lounging in the sun at the beach to rock climbing in northern New Jersey to eating my way through New York City. I always considered my life complete because I was blessed with a great family, the two best friends a girl could ever have and an amazing career as a forester. Then I met my now husband Jason. Our parents were best friends for years, but Jason and I never met. He moved to California the year before we met and I was busy going to college and traveling everywhere I could. When I came back from Europe in June of 2008, I finally met the man of my dreams on his birthday. After traveling to California to see him almost twice every month, he moved back to New Jersey that November to start a life with me. In March 2009, Jason and his little brother decided to join the Marine Corps and that May they were both off to boot camp. After graduation, we were engaged to be married, and because of the unpredictable nature of the military, we decided to get married during Christmas leave on December 27th. Our ceremony was tiny, consisting of our closest family and friends in Atlantic City, NJ. I couldn’t ask for a more gorgeous day. This August, I decided to leave Rutgers University when Jason was stationed here in Jacksonville. A week after we moved here, we found out that we were pregnant! Now here we are, transitioning into the 2nd trimester with our first sonogram on October 29th, due on Mother’s Day 2011 and loving every single decision we’ve made that landed us here. I look forward to sharing our fairytale and perhaps helping others and learning from them too.

The Dresser From a Dark Place (Part 1)

Doesn't look like it would be so difficult... wrong!

If you have read very many of my posts, you know I have been working quite diligently to get Braylin’s room “perfect.”  For the past couple weeks, I have been at a standstill.  About a month ago, I ordered a dresser/changing table combo online.  I was a little leery of the quality and how hard it would be to put together, but it had good reviews so I went for it.  It was shipped for free to a local store, so we picked it up and wanted to put it together as soon as we got home.  We got all of the parts (about fifty) out of the box and realized a piece was broken.  We decided to work up to the point that we needed that piece and stop until I could get the piece ordered and delivered.  Well, about ten minutes into the terrible directions, we found that we were missing several of the screws and bolts that we needed.

After a minor (ok… major) emotional breakdown, I ordered all of the pieces that were broken or missing.  I was told it would take ten days for processing plus shipping time.  At this point, the dresser was still in fifty pieces spread throughout her room, so I couldn’t do anything except close the door and pretend it wasn’t happening.  Meanwhile, I shopped online and planned out exactly how I wanted to arrange the furniture, paintings, etc.  Of course, that changes on a regular basis, but it is fun to pretend that I know what I want.

Will we ever get this room put together?  To be continued in Part 2…

That must have been so frustrating Dusti! It sounds like you have a good attitude about the whole thing! I’m sure the nursery will all come together and will look great.

DYI furniture can be sooo frustrating, especially when it’s missing essential pieces! I’m glad you (and Ryan) were able to survive the process.

Thank you! I am so glad we both made it through alive! :)
