Alexis Schulman

My name is Alexis Schulman and I’m a born and raised Jersey shore girl. I grew up 5 minutes from the beach, so bare feet and a sand filled jeep were always the normal for me. Living in such a diverse place constantly awarded me the opportunity to explore almost any activity I was interested in. These ranged from simply lounging in the sun at the beach to rock climbing in northern New Jersey to eating my way through New York City. I always considered my life complete because I was blessed with a great family, the two best friends a girl could ever have and an amazing career as a forester. Then I met my now husband Jason. Our parents were best friends for years, but Jason and I never met. He moved to California the year before we met and I was busy going to college and traveling everywhere I could. When I came back from Europe in June of 2008, I finally met the man of my dreams on his birthday. After traveling to California to see him almost twice every month, he moved back to New Jersey that November to start a life with me. In March 2009, Jason and his little brother decided to join the Marine Corps and that May they were both off to boot camp. After graduation, we were engaged to be married, and because of the unpredictable nature of the military, we decided to get married during Christmas leave on December 27th. Our ceremony was tiny, consisting of our closest family and friends in Atlantic City, NJ. I couldn’t ask for a more gorgeous day. This August, I decided to leave Rutgers University when Jason was stationed here in Jacksonville. A week after we moved here, we found out that we were pregnant! Now here we are, transitioning into the 2nd trimester with our first sonogram on October 29th, due on Mother’s Day 2011 and loving every single decision we’ve made that landed us here. I look forward to sharing our fairytale and perhaps helping others and learning from them too.

The cradle gets some use

My mother-in-law purchased the cradle of my choice as a baby gift when I was expecting with Michael.  I was so excited to use it that we had it assembled over two months before my due date.

Low and behold, Michael never slept in his cradle.  No matter what I did, I just couldn’t get him to sleep in it.  Every time I placed him on the mattress he would instantly wake up and begin screaming.  After a few weeks of this behavior I gave up trying and put the cradle away to hopefully use another day with another child.

That day I’d been waiting for has come and gone and I’m happy to say that the cradle is still currently in use.  Maeve has slept every night in it.  If she’s awake when I put her down, I simply rock her for a few minutes and she usually settles right down.  Michael reacted in the opposite manner and screamed even harder and louder when I rocked him.

Because I was afraid Maeve wouldn’t like the cradle as well, I didn’t purchase new bedding for it.  She sleeps on a blue sheet while surrounded by a blue bumper pad.  She doesn’t know the difference, right?  At least her blankets are pink.

Beside, by the time I get around to finding the bedding I like for the cradle, she’ll be out of the cradle and into the crib!

What does your baby sleep in?  Is it what you expected?

Until yesterday, Joshua slept in his swing. All of his naps, his night sleep, everything was in his swing. The motor is even burned out so it didn’t even swing. That didn’t seem to bother him, though. Emily slept on her nursing pillow for ages too. I think Nathan was the only one who wasn’t oddly picky about where they sleep. I figure, as long as they’re sleeping, I don’t really care how or where they do it. Glad to see that beautiful cradle is getting use, though!

    Brynn,

My friend feels like she’s doing something wrong because her son will only sleep in his bouncer. Whether it’s in the swing, bouncer, or on a pillow, it doesn’t matter where the baby sleeps. As long as they sleep and we as moms get some rest, that’s all that matters!
