Joakima Carr

I was born on October 18, 1981, in Honolulu, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. From a young age, I have always had a fascination with books. Some kids throw tantrums for toys in the grocery store, but not me. I went crazy for a brand new book. I had to have one or else I closed my eyes, threw my head backwards, threw my arms by my sides and jumped up and down crying. Needless to say, this fascination with books and love for reading only intensified throughout the years. My personal collection of books has grown to fill more than five bookcases. I later discovered a love for music and singing in elementary school. Who knew that this would lead to my learning to play the French horn and playing in the marching and concert bands in middle school and high school? My talent for singing helped me to win my high school beauty pageant and the honor of “most talented” for the graduating class of 2000. Music continued to hold on to me even in college. I spent years studying as a classically trained Mezzo-soprano and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the Florida State University College of Music. I also continued to play the French horn and marched in the world-renowned 400+ member Marching Chiefs for 3 years. Today, I look forward to finishing my graduate degree coursework in Nutrition Education and Health Promotion and conducting research. I am a certified fitness, yoga, and Spinning instructor. I have a small Snoodle named Thomas. I am now the proud wife of an active duty Marine. We recently moved to the Camp Lejeune area in April. We have a beautiful 14-month-old son and are currently expecting our second bundle of joy January 7, 2012.

Everything Happens for a Reason (Part 1)

This was definitely a nail biting experience...

At every appointment I have had with the doctor, she asks about fetal movement.  She said that I should feel ten movements in two hours a couple of times a day.  On a normal day, I get that easy with my little gymnast… Friday was a little different.

I woke up feeling kind of blah, so I decided not to go to school.  I spent the day taking it easy until my appointment in the afternoon.  I was glad that I already had an appointment scheduled, because I did not feel the baby move all day.

When I got to my appointment, I started out by telling her that I had not felt the baby move all day.  She checked her heartbeat and suggested that I go up to labor and delivery triage to be hooked up to some monitors for twenty to thirty minutes to make sure everything is normal.

Talk about a nerve wracking trip to the elevator, then up to labor and delivery!  I arrived at triage and the nurses immediately connected me to a few different machines to monitor the baby’s heartbeat, my heartbeat, uterine activity, etc.  The nurse told me to relax for a few minutes and she would be back to check in on me.

Relax?  I laid there and tried to “relax,” while looking around at all of the medical equipment surrounding me.  The nurse came back in about ten minutes later, checked the monitors, and told me I needed to stay for a few more minutes, but she could already see that I had nothing to worry about.  Ahh… a deep sigh of relief and back to looking at all of the gadgets in the hospital room.  The nurse came back accompanied by a midwife; they looked over everything and said that everything looked perfect and I was good to go.

This was by far the scariest appointment I have experienced, but while I was there I had an epiphany.

Find out what my epiphany was in Part 2!  Stay tuned!
