Joakima Carr

I was born on October 18, 1981, in Honolulu, Hawaii on the island of Oahu. From a young age, I have always had a fascination with books. Some kids throw tantrums for toys in the grocery store, but not me. I went crazy for a brand new book. I had to have one or else I closed my eyes, threw my head backwards, threw my arms by my sides and jumped up and down crying. Needless to say, this fascination with books and love for reading only intensified throughout the years. My personal collection of books has grown to fill more than five bookcases. I later discovered a love for music and singing in elementary school. Who knew that this would lead to my learning to play the French horn and playing in the marching and concert bands in middle school and high school? My talent for singing helped me to win my high school beauty pageant and the honor of “most talented” for the graduating class of 2000. Music continued to hold on to me even in college. I spent years studying as a classically trained Mezzo-soprano and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the Florida State University College of Music. I also continued to play the French horn and marched in the world-renowned 400+ member Marching Chiefs for 3 years. Today, I look forward to finishing my graduate degree coursework in Nutrition Education and Health Promotion and conducting research. I am a certified fitness, yoga, and Spinning instructor. I have a small Snoodle named Thomas. I am now the proud wife of an active duty Marine. We recently moved to the Camp Lejeune area in April. We have a beautiful 14-month-old son and are currently expecting our second bundle of joy January 7, 2012.

A Major Milestone

No more diapers for Nathan!

Nearly two years ago, Chad and I went to meet with our financial planners.  Before our visit, they had us break down our budget so that they could get a good idea of where our money was going on a monthly basis.  The budget they gave me was not structured the way mine is, and their categories neglected to include one of our major monthly expenses – diapers!  So under the heading “Other”, I had to write in diapers and the average monthly amount.  The planners thought it was funny that I had to have a separate category for diapers.  As a family with two kids in diapers full time, however, we spent a decent amount of money on diapers every month.

Fast forward to present day, and we’ve gone from just two kids in diapers to three kids in diapers.  Until recently.  Emily and Joshua are clearly both in diapers full time.  Emily occasionally makes noises about using the potty, but only occasionally.  Joshua only makes noises.  Nathan has been potty trained during the day since May a year ago, though he still wore diapers at night.  When I asked him a while back if he wanted to use the big-boy potty at night, he said, “No, that’s okay mommy.  My diaper will be my potty.”

Almost a month ago, Chad was helping him get ready for bed, and Nathan decided it was time to forgo the diaper and wear undies to bed.  Chad nervously tucked him into bed, and I think I checked on him about five times that night to make sure there had been no accidents.  Happily, he (and the sheets) survived the night!  Since that fateful night, he has only had one accident, so I’m now counting him officially fully potty-trained.

In my getting-ready-for-Joshua preparations, I had purchased a box of diapers for Nathan so that he didn’t run out before I made it to Sam’s Club again.  When we went last week, I was able to return that box and get one in his sister’s size.  I’m relieved to be down to only two kids in diapers.  Our diaper production has decreased, and my budget is much happier.  Hooray!
