Alexis Schulman

My name is Alexis Schulman and I’m a born and raised Jersey shore girl. I grew up 5 minutes from the beach, so bare feet and a sand filled jeep were always the normal for me. Living in such a diverse place constantly awarded me the opportunity to explore almost any activity I was interested in. These ranged from simply lounging in the sun at the beach to rock climbing in northern New Jersey to eating my way through New York City. I always considered my life complete because I was blessed with a great family, the two best friends a girl could ever have and an amazing career as a forester. Then I met my now husband Jason. Our parents were best friends for years, but Jason and I never met. He moved to California the year before we met and I was busy going to college and traveling everywhere I could. When I came back from Europe in June of 2008, I finally met the man of my dreams on his birthday. After traveling to California to see him almost twice every month, he moved back to New Jersey that November to start a life with me. In March 2009, Jason and his little brother decided to join the Marine Corps and that May they were both off to boot camp. After graduation, we were engaged to be married, and because of the unpredictable nature of the military, we decided to get married during Christmas leave on December 27th. Our ceremony was tiny, consisting of our closest family and friends in Atlantic City, NJ. I couldn’t ask for a more gorgeous day. This August, I decided to leave Rutgers University when Jason was stationed here in Jacksonville. A week after we moved here, we found out that we were pregnant! Now here we are, transitioning into the 2nd trimester with our first sonogram on October 29th, due on Mother’s Day 2011 and loving every single decision we’ve made that landed us here. I look forward to sharing our fairytale and perhaps helping others and learning from them too.

Tracy’s Baby Shower

The food table - yummy!

One of my good friends, Tracy, is expecting her third child, a boy, in several weeks.  I think every mom deserves a baby shower, regardless of whether it’s her first baby or her fifth.  So last weekend, two friends and I threw her a baby shower!

Normally, this wouldn’t have been such a big deal.  We purposefully kept the decorations simple.  I stuck with recipes I knew well for my part of the food.  We didn’t even play any games.  Still, I found myself getting three hours of sleep the night before the shower getting everything ready.  I forget how much time a newborn really does take – they can take up hours a day with nursing alone, never mind the snuggling and play time.  And throw in Nathan and Emily and even with the best planning and preparation, I was still up painfully late Friday night finishing it all up.  I love Joshua, but he is time consuming!

The shower itself was really fun – we sat, talked, and ate.  It was nice to spend some time without kids and with other adults.  The only child there was Joshua, and he slept through almost all of it.  I also remembered how grateful I was to not be pregnant anymore.

Three of the women there (including the guest of honor) are expecting babies within the next two months.  I appreciated being reminded how exciting a new little one is and what a blessing they really are – I forget sometimes amidst the craziness of our household.

All in all, it was a nice break (once I was done preparing for it), and I enjoyed spending time with friends.  It was great to celebrate another little bundle of joy arriving soon!

Have you been able to get out yet?  Did you enjoy it?
