Alexis Schulman

My name is Alexis Schulman and I’m a born and raised Jersey shore girl. I grew up 5 minutes from the beach, so bare feet and a sand filled jeep were always the normal for me. Living in such a diverse place constantly awarded me the opportunity to explore almost any activity I was interested in. These ranged from simply lounging in the sun at the beach to rock climbing in northern New Jersey to eating my way through New York City. I always considered my life complete because I was blessed with a great family, the two best friends a girl could ever have and an amazing career as a forester. Then I met my now husband Jason. Our parents were best friends for years, but Jason and I never met. He moved to California the year before we met and I was busy going to college and traveling everywhere I could. When I came back from Europe in June of 2008, I finally met the man of my dreams on his birthday. After traveling to California to see him almost twice every month, he moved back to New Jersey that November to start a life with me. In March 2009, Jason and his little brother decided to join the Marine Corps and that May they were both off to boot camp. After graduation, we were engaged to be married, and because of the unpredictable nature of the military, we decided to get married during Christmas leave on December 27th. Our ceremony was tiny, consisting of our closest family and friends in Atlantic City, NJ. I couldn’t ask for a more gorgeous day. This August, I decided to leave Rutgers University when Jason was stationed here in Jacksonville. A week after we moved here, we found out that we were pregnant! Now here we are, transitioning into the 2nd trimester with our first sonogram on October 29th, due on Mother’s Day 2011 and loving every single decision we’ve made that landed us here. I look forward to sharing our fairytale and perhaps helping others and learning from them too.

My life as I know it

My life is so different from what it was three short years ago when we were first married.  It’s so cliche, but where did the time go?

I’ve remained in contact with many friends from home and those from during my time at college in South Carolina.  Although still in contact with many people, I haven’t seen most of them in a few years.  Out of those friends I still see regularly when I visit my parents in my home town, all of them are single except for one who is married.  And I am the only one with children.  On top of this, none of my college friends are married.  I am definitely at a different spot in my life where sleeping in past seven on the weekends and running errands from 1 to 3 pm just doesn’t happen.  None of my friends can relate to this way of life.

One of my bridesmaids, Lynae, is vacationing on Emerald Isle in a few weeks.  I haven’t seen her in almost three years.  We went through it all during our four years in college.  We were teammates, roommates, classmates, and friends.  She was the first person I told I planned on marrying Charlie.

Although a part of every aspect of my life for four years, sadly, Lynae doesn’t know anything about me now.  I care for my husband and two small children:  cooking dinner, folding laundry, using sippy cups, and changing diapers are everyday activities for me.

When Lynae walks into my house in a few weeks I hope she won’t feel out of place.

Did you ever feel like you were at a different stage in life than your friends?

I was in your friends’ position – I got married and had kids later than they did. I think my best friend from high school had four kids before I was even married! It did make it a little weird to visit her with all the kids running around while I was still single, but we were good enough friends that it wasn’t a deal breaker. Good luck with the upcoming visit!
